Being Pregnant With a Toddler Is a Whole Different Ball Game

When I was pregnant with my first baby, I had the best time. I napped whenever, wherever, I put my (swollen) feet up, ate ice cream without sharing, and binge-watched anything I wanted to, for as long as I wanted. Being pregnant the second time around? Absolute mayhem.

At the time, my daughter Mila was 2 years and 9 months old, and as the default parent she relied on me for everything — play time, bath time, bedtime, snacks, cuddles, all of it. Can you tell me a bit about yourself? Are you a mum? Are you the designer of Bobby G Babywear

I am 29 years old, married and have a 5-year-old son called Bobby. I moved to Australia from Bristol, England in 2012, where I met my husband Glen-both living in the Bondi bubble. Two years later I became pregnant with Bobby! In 2015 Bobby was born, and my second baby, Bobby G Baby Wear, was born 11 months later.

What was the inspiration behind your business?

We didn’t have permanent Australian residency or citizenship when I found out I was pregnant. I was desperate to find a role where I could stay at home and look after my baby to avoid paying insane child care fees.

At the time I had no idea what I wanted to do, as my previous roles were general admin and reception, which I didn’t particularly love. However, while pregnant I developed a  mini obsession for baby clothing, constantly sneaking bags through the front door and hiding them in the wardrobe pretending they had been there for a while!

I was always putting together mood boards on Pinterest for different seasons and styles for fun, and then Glen suggestedI start my own brand. So, I did! In the last few months of my pregnancy I created a logo and my first designs, which were the popular hakuna matata slogan, all with the help of a graphic designer my sister knew. I then created my Instagram, website and content, then I launched in December 2015-11 months after Bobby born (and when I felt ready to juggle a business and a baby).

What was it like launching a whole new career?

I had no previous experience in fashion except working as a retail assistant in a few shops! However, my Auntie had a children’s clothing shop in Brighton, England, where she created her own designs and stocked top brands, so maybe it runs in my blood. I was totally obsessed with her and everything she did, and loved taking trips to stay with her and my cousins and work in her shop all day long!

Tell me about the Bobby G style?

Then I work whilst he has lunch and chills. Friday is similar, but we also have swimming in the afternoon, so it is just a few days I’m winging it!

I am constantly learning and aiming to do bigger and better. There is always the advice from your Doctor, your local mother’s group, your mother, Sally at school pickup and don’t forget the in-laws! We read every pregnancy self help book, attend all the free pre-natal classes and pick up every free pamphlet in sight but can’t anyone really prepare you for childbirth? Some things they forget to tell us, neglect to share or better yet, are those pre-birth thoughts really better off unknown?

We spoke with some amazing mummies from our One Fine Baby community and asked them to share their thoughts on what surprised them most about their birth experience. 

1. Your nipples can bleed and breastfeeding can hurt... a lot

Breast feeding can be hard, I mean really hard. Even if you have done it before. This doesn’t mean it will be difficult for everyone. You might just find wandering thoughts if you will get through that midnight feed with any nipple left. 

2. You probably will poop yourself during birth

Did we really just go there? You will probably poop yourself during birth, it’s pretty much guaranteed. Don’t freak out though, it's totally normal!   

3. A lot, I mean, a lot of people will look between your legs!

This is totally different for each birth experience, but you will soon learn to let go of scary thoughts that come with strangers looking between your legs.

What was the inspiration behind launching Goldie + Ace? 

Alana: Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I would have a clothing label. My grandma was a brilliant pattern maker so was a huge inspiration to me growing up. She always told me to not work in the apparel business (but I didn’t listen, did I?!). 

Instead, I started working as an assistant buyer for a department store and worked my butt off to become a buyer. Working as the bedlinen buyer for Harris Scarfe is where I met Chris, who was the marketing manager at the time, and our friendship grew. I then moved to Adairs to become their bedlinen buyer and was there for 7 years before having my first baby. I loved bedlinen, but my true passion was clothing. I felt that children’s wear was an area that had the most potential in the Australian market and you can really have fun with it. 

Chris: After many years of friendship and working with Alana, she came to me with the idea of building a children’s wear brand. I thought, why not?! I have a lot of experience in the fashion industry but not with kids wear, so I was up for the challenge. Alana is the day-to-day and design, and I support with the PR & Marketing side of the business. It’s a great relationship because we are super honest with each other.  

Can you tell us about Goldie + Ace’s quirky designs?

Alana: Goldie and Ace started predominately as a great quality and timeless children’s wear range that was based on a quirky and fun story from the characters we had hand-drawn for the collection. The tones were super neutral, with prints and characters that were quirky but cool. Over time the idea of nostalgia and our childhood began to creep into styles, prints and colours. Right now we are really inspired by the styles we wore growing up in the 80’s and 90’s. Our quality, though, is consistent, hence why we have such a strong and loyal customer base. 

Chris: I love working on our campaign shoots. We take people on a journey back to their childhood with the retro vibe styles but still giving a nod to our brand roots with characters and prints. Our customers love the vibe our kids have in shoots, we pick all the kids who have their own unique personality and attitude. 

We are big believers in finding your rhythm and sticking to what works for you and your family. There aren’t any blanket approaches that work for everyone.

Look after yourself so you can look after others

It’s so easy to put everyone else first and forget about the most important person – you. Make sure you treat your mind and body kindly, so you have the strength and mindset to nurture others. We all have those days when bub is in a foul mood that seems to go on and on and on. When things reach boiling point and you feel like ripping your hair out, simply leave bub in a safe spot and give yourself a minute or two. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that it’s just a moment in time. By the time you return to bub, they might just have found something to take their mind of things. And if not, then you at least had a moment to think of a strategy to get you through until bedtime. Tomorrow is going to be a new day!

What was the inspiration behind Little Wiwa?

Back in 2016, our first son Vinnie started signs of crawling at 4.5 months and became an active commando crawler. Within a short time, he developed calluses on his elbows and putting him anywhere besides the hardwood floor or carpet wasn’t an option. It wasn’t practical nor comfortable and I knew I had to find a safe, plush mat to support his newfound motor development. 

After much research, not only could I not find one that wasn’t loud in a myriad of colours, I also learnt the dangers of PVC in toys and the risks it could impose on our (kids’) health. Since then, there was no turning back. With these in mind, my aspirations were set and the rest was history.

Tell us about the materials Little Wiwa uses - and why you chose these as opposed to PVC? 

Little Wiwa play mats are made using 100% sustainable and non-toxic Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) foam and free from PVC, BPA and latex, making it a safe choice for your little ones. All our mats are thickly padded (15mm), reversible and waterproof - perfect for our little tumblers to play, learn and explore safely. 

Numerous research has been done to determine the safety of PVC in kids’ toys – the results have shown that PVC contains plasticisers (softening agent) to increase the elasticity and flexibility of the material as well as stablisers that contain harmful chemical additives when emitted as off-gas in its lifecycle - hence the strong odour. PVC is also harmful to the environment, as when incinerated PVC releases these hazardous chemicals, polluting the air. 

Kids are still vulnerable to these toxic chemicals as their bodies are still developing, so having babies and infants doing tummy time on these mats at such close proximity, smelling the off-gas, is simply unsafe. With this in mind, there is simply no compromise. 

Unlike PVC, TPU foams are elastic and do not require any toxic chemical treatments before use. Albeit similar to PVC in its physical properties, i.e. waterproof and flexible, TPU require no additives and are biodegradable - great for the environment, a safe alternative and hence why our play mats are the safest choice for little ones.  

What is Little Wiwa's business philosophy?

Safety first. It’s the first thing that pops to mind with a little one on the way. Our business ethos and products are created with safety in mind. 

Play mats are one of the most useful essentials when it comes to babies – to aid in their developmental stages, namely tummy time and supporting them in their crawling stages.

What was your background before moving into baby products?

I worked in Research & Product Development as well as in Marketing before I fell pregnant with my first. Even though I was working in a leadership role, I wasn’t quite happy as I needed to find my purpose – no doubt there was always a void. It took having my first child to figure out what that my dream was and soon Little Wiwa was born and the rest is history.  

What were some of the challenges of launching a business with a baby-in-tow and how did you deal with them?

Like any new businesses, we’ve had humble beginnings with plenty of hurdles and challenges – the juggle is real! 

Having your own small business means you are working 24/7, as there are simply not enough time to do the numerous tasks with little ones in tow. The challenges were simply lack of sleep, working late into the wee mornings and waking up every few hours to nurse my babies. 

We didn’t have much capital to invest in resources either so it was all me and hubby working out of our huge double garage. Eight months into the business, I fell pregnant with my second baby. It didn’t really phase me until I was quite large and handling our products were very challenging (as our products are quite bulky). We then recruited help and started building a team from then – it was hard to let go at first, but no doubt it was the right thing to do. As since then I was able to focus on the bigger picture and expand the business in other areas. 

I have also learnt to be diligent in my time management. There’s a time scheduled for every task required and processes are more structured – to create a balance in work and parenting life.

What are your new rules in the house to maintain order?

Creating a new timetable for chores around the house. Since we are all indoors now, it is important that the children understand that the chores around the house (like laundry, dishes, vacuuming) is everyone's responsibility now (where it might've been less on the kids previously due to their school and afterschool curriculum).

Establishing set times where the children are allowed to ask questions regarding their school work or other non urgent things. This helps the us, the parents get work done without the constant interruption. They are encouraged to compile a list of questions down which needs clarification and it will be discussed during those set times during the day.

Setting up a 'quiet room/corner' in the house so anyone who needs to be on extended calls, needs to conduct that in the 'quiet room' so it does not distract the other members doing work. This also applies to the children taking Zoom calls with their teachers for their lessons.

Do you have any tips for a good daily routine?

I've personally allowed the kids to sleep in a little as they go to bed a little later as well. This way I get to have a solid 2-3 hours of work before they get up. We then follow the usual school routine and extend the hours of the day depending on what time 'home school' starts.

We try to stick to our normal routine as much as possible (get dressed, make their beds, breakfast then school) however we now encourage them to make their own lunch so we have allowed a longer lunch break for them.

They are not allowed to play on any devices during the school week (except to do homework) so that rule remains.

In a nutshell, we stick to our normal routine as much as possible but let's face it, none of this is 'normal' so within the new normal, we allow for flexibility.

Favourite activity to keep the kids busy- that doesn't include technology?

1. We do reconciliation on grocery bills every week so now that the kids are 10, we get them to help us do a weekly tally. They have to repeat it until they get the same answer 3 times (to make sure they've added correctly). So it takes them a while to get through it and helps them practice maths.

2. Origami ! The boys are really into making bookmarks and other origami animals which they can decorate later.

3. Other things are playing handball, boardgames like risk and monopoly (that takes forever to finish - haha!)

What was the inspiration behind Silky Tots slips?

With my first daughter, Ollie, I kept finding lumps of hair in her cot after she slept. I was confused as I had the best organic cotton sheets but I quickly realised it was friction that was causing the problem. After some research, I found that silk would eliminate this friction but allowing the hair to glide gently over the mattress surface. 

When researching, I came upon all the other health benefits of silk: it’s non-absorbent so doesn’t strip skin or hair of its natural oils, it’s breathable, temperature regulating and un-inhabitable by dust mites, so was the perfect solution!

I searched online but I couldn’t find anything silk on the market that was safe for babies. So, it made total sense to me, if I was creating something for Ollie, why wouldn’t all parents want the best for their babies too?! That was my ‘aha!’ moment. 

How is Silky Tots unique?

The Cot Slip didn’t exist before I created it. I wanted to create something that was safe to use in the cot, whilst still offering an accessible price point. It took 18 months of product development to get our design right but it was all worth it as we have a truly innovative, safe and practical product.

Ingredients:

175g Butter

175g caster sugar

3 eggs

150g self raising flour

1tsp baking powder

100g icing sugar

75g cocoa powder

5 creme eggs

Method:

- Preheat the oven to 180 C, grease and line a medium sized shallow tin.

- In a bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the sifted flour, baking powder and cocoa and fold in.

- Turn into the prepared tin, push into the corners and level out

the top.

- Bake in oven for 25-30 minutes (test with a skewer, it should come out clean if cake is cooked). Cool and place on a wire rack.

- Sift the icing sugar and cocoa into a bowl and add a little water (few tsp) to make a spreadable icing. Spread over the top of the cooled cake and top with smashed pieces of creme egg.

What was the ‘light bulb moment’ behind My Little Giggles first product launch, the Learning Tower?

The Learning Tower had already been created when Carla had the lightbulb moment. Tammy was reluctant to start the business, as she had a toddler and was working part-time. But we managed it and both had another baby each whileMy Little Giggles was still starting out.

How did the two of you meet?

We met at Gymbaroo when Grace (Tammy’s daughter) and Harper (Carla’s daughter) were 18months old. From then we became friends due to the girls being the cheekiest and loudest toddlers in the group! It was during a play date at Tammy’s house that Carla saw the very first learning tower that was created.

Tell us about the different skills and strengths you both bring to the brand and business?

Tammy is the creative who also happens to be very handy on the power tools! Carla is the brains behind the sales side of things and has now mastered the crazy world of Instagram and flaunting all of our gorgeous products on there.

What makes My Little Giggles products unique?

Our products were designed for our children’s use first. So you could say they were our guinea pigs. From the Learning Tower, which we knew from living in apartments and town houses needed to be light and compact, then to the PlayBar, we spent days on the lounge room floor using them. We knew they our products needed to not only be fun for the babies, but also needed to look good for everyone in the house. We knew we were on to good ideas-it was just a large learning experience of how to promote them to a wide audience. We’ve spent a lot of money making sure all of our products are compliant to meet theSafety Standards, purely because these products are for babies.

More than two decades ago, one man had an idea. It was an idea so visionary that it would revolutionize an entire industry and forever change the way we think about prams. 2019 marks 20 years since we saw the first Bugaboo prams rolling along in the Netherlands. This pram was so visionary that it would revolutionize an entire industry and forever change the way we think about prams. The Bugaboo has come a long way since that first model hit the streets, constantly innovating to meet the needs of the modern parent. It all began, when Max Barenbrug had to come up with a graduation project to complete his education at the academy of industrial design in Eindhoven (now the design academy). As we wanted to celebrate our 5-year anniversary, we decided to modify the branding and use a chrome finish on the metal logos and zipper pulls. Playing with your baby also allows you to build a connection with each other, to build trust and to increase their feelings of security and wellbeing.

They’re growing every day and are becoming stronger and more able to make coordinated movements. Babies are increasingly able to respond to familiar voices and formulate responses such as smiling or cooing.

Playing with my newborn 

In a sentence, this is Anchor & Arrow Baby.  Founded by Lorna Doe, she began her small business manufacturing styling baby swaddles while on maternity leave and how has a whole range of practical and stylish baby products in beautiful designs.

What happens as soon as I fall pregnant?

As soon the fertilised egg implants into the lining of your uterus, implantation occurs. This is what’s considered the moment pregnancy officially begins. Then, hormones to prevent the lining of the uterus from shedding are released. These hormones are oestrogen and progesterone. As well as increasing blood supply to the uterus to relax it to make room for the growing baby, their numbers increase each day. This results in a plethora of pregnancy symptoms.

How early can pregnancy symptoms start to show?

As your pregnancy is considered to begin on the first day of your last menstrual period you actually aren’t pregnant in the first two (official) weeks of your pregnancy. For this reason, the earliest you would begin to feel any kind of pregnancy system is between two to four weeks into your pregnancy (two weeks after ovulation and four weeks after the first day of your last period.)

Does every woman experience certain symptoms?

No. While some women experience nausea and vomiting others have reported only tender breasts and food aversions. Some women even report feeling no symptoms at all! And while these symptoms can occur at any point and any volume in the pregnancy, the majority are reported to occur in the first and third trimesters. As this is when the surge of hormones are at their highest.

You’re exhausted, exhilarated, instantly tied by the heart to this new little creature. Seconds later, worry sets in. You feel an overwhelming urge to protect them, ensure their safety and never let them go, even though you’ve only just met.

From the gate, along with the emotion and endorphins, you’ll undoubtedly face hurdles. This is all normal, in some capacity. Some babies have feeding issues, or struggle to gain weight, others suffer from jaundice, and for some, the issues don’t set in until you’ve left the hospital and settled at home. This was my experience with colic.

What is colic?

Colic is defined ‘as crying for three or more hours a day, three or more days a week, for three or more weeks.’ 

That’s it.

It’s a very difficult thing to diagnose, but if you have a baby that is healthy, gaining weight and otherwise happy, but that cries in a special, predictable pattern - it could be colic. Babies with colic are healthy, and eating and growing well but cry in spells. The spells happen at the same time of day.

With a little more research after my second child was born, I learned that colic was a kind of gas pain that indeed was caused by an immature digestive system. That gas can only be passed through the bottom, not a burp.

My personal experience with colic:

Once you find one, you feel like you’ve hit the jackpot. It’s like finding the treasure, and you - you lucky scoundrel - are a winner!

So this time, we decided to try a hotel in Denarau, which is only 15 minutes from Nadi airport. We settled on the Radisson Blu Fiji Resort as we found a great all-inclusive deal on My Fiji. We got breakfast for free daily, kids 0-3 ate free (or if older, got a free kid’s meal with every purchase of an adult’s meal), we also got transfers, a $FJ500 room voucher and a day trip, as well as a few other things, like free kid’s club.

All we had to pay for were lunch and dinners, spa treatments, and drinks. It seemed pretty reasonable.

The first thing you need to do is think about how much leave you want to take. Do you think you’ll be itching to get back to work, or do you want to take your time? Spoiler alert though: whatever you think you want now, it might very well change once baby comes along, so make sure your plans - and your budget - aren’t so tight that you can’t change your mind. 

These hacks for prepping your parental leave budget will help you understand your financial position and what you need to do to make sure your time off (and let’s be honest, it’s no holiday!) is spent soaking up your little one, not worrying about money or when you need to get back to work.

1. Check yo’ entitlements

This is your obvious first step - you need to work out what you (and your partner, if you’re in a relationship) are entitled to parental leave wise, so you know where you’ll stand financially. If your workplace doesn’t offer paid parental leave, you may be entitled to paid leave from The Australian Government, or perhaps even a mixture of government and workplace entitlements. At the moment, the government offers 18 weeks of paid leave based on the weekly rate of the national minimum wage (which is just over $800 at the time of writing). If your baby is born from July 1 2023, you’ll be eligible for 20 weeks paid leave from the government - hooray for parental leave reform!

TIP: If you’re entitled to paid parental leave from your employer, have a think about what will work for you and if they’d be willing to be flexible on how it’s taken. For example, your employer might offer three months of full pay parental leave, but perhaps they’d be willing to pay you half pay, for six months, meaning you’d have a regular income you can count on for six months of leave. Also, could you ask for a pay rise before you go on leave? I know it might feel scary, but if you’re due for a payrise, don’t not ask because you’re pregnant. If your salary goes up, so will your parental leave payments and that could be a big financial help.

2. Get a look at the full picture

When it comes to money, you need to take your head out of the sand and get a really clear understanding of what is coming in, and what is going out. This exercise isn’t necessarily about restricting your spending, it’s about becoming aware of where your money goes and making sure you’re ok with what you’re spending your hard earned cash on. There are heaps of free money tracking apps that you can link to your bank accounts that will tell you exactly where your money is going (yes, you do spend $350 on Uber Eats every week. Ekk!). Once you have a clear picture, you’ll be able to find any obvious places to save or pull back on. 

3. Bank your leave

From the moment you find out you’re pregnant, try and hold onto all the leave you can. Of course this can only happen if you’re well enough to work during your pregnancy, so this might be out of your control. But if you can, try and bank as much leave as you can - both sick leave and annual leave -  then you can tack it on to your parental leave to give yourself some more paid time off with your little one. 

TIP: This doesn’t mean you can’t go on that Babymoon! Look for a long-weekend to take advantage of!

4. Do a trial run

While you’re pregnant and if you’re in a relationship, do a trial run of living off one income. Not only will this help you work out if it’s possible and where and how it might be tricky, but it’s a great way to help you save money for when you’re actually on leave. Set it up so all of, or a large portion of, your salary goes directly into a savings account. This means you won’t be tempted to spend it, and you’ll be amazed at how much you can save by doing this on and off in the lead up to the baby’s arrival.

5. Something old, something new, something borrowed …

Buying baby things is exciting, and one of the best bits about being a mum to be! But also, it’s very easy to get carried away buying expensive things you really don’t need. There are so many great rental businesses out there now that let you rent the big ticket items you won’t use for very long. Think bassinets and car capsules, baby swings and travel cots. Consider renting these to save a tonne of money, or perhaps a friend or family member has one you can borrow for free!

6. Big ticket items

It’s no secret that babies can cost a lot of money and there are a few big ticket items that you’ll need to fork out for to set yourself up. For the big exxy items like a pram and cot, don’t impulse buy! Shop around for the best deal or wait until there are sales like Black Friday, Boxing Day or Cyber Monday where you can save big bucks! Or even better, head to the next One Fine Baby expo for special deals and discounts too!

7. Meal planning

Don’t roll your eyes just yet … yes, meal planning can save you a lot of money! Go back to item #2 on this list and have a look at how much money you’re spending on takeaway or eating out. If it’s a significant amount, meal planning can really save you a lot of cash. Meal Planning doesn’t mean you need to eat boiled chicken and broccoli every day, it just means being more organised so you don’t impulse shop or impulse Uber Eats! If meal planning isn’t up your alley, maybe try a meal kit company like Hello Fresh or Marley Spoon to make it easy.

TIP: Do your grocery shop online so you don’t just buy everything yummy you see as you wander the isles. 

8. Suss out your subscriptions

Most of us have a bunch of direct debits that fly out of our bank accounts each month and we don’t even bat an eyelid, but add them all up and it can be a lot. Do you really need those five different streaming services, Apple Music and Spotify, plus that app that edits photos you pay $17 a month for? And can you pause that gym membership for a few months, when you know you won’t be using it?

9. Pick up the phone

So, if you’re like me, this may be your worst nightmare, but I promise it will be worth it. If you have a mortgage, or pay bills like home and contents insurance, or private health insurance, or even your phone bill -  it’s worth picking up the phone and talking to your current provider to see if they can offer you a better deal. And if it’s a hard no from them, check out other providers and see what they can offer you. This exercise might take you a few hours on the phone (and let’s be honest, on hold!) but it could save you thousands, seriously!

10. If you don’t ask …

Some people feel more comfortable than others doing this, but if you don’t ask, you won’t get! If friends and family are throwing you a baby shower, or work asks you what you need, be honest and tell them. Perhaps set up a registry with all the baby items you’re after to make it simple - this will save you a bunch of money buying stuff others give you, and stop you from receiving 33 onesies, which are cute, but unnecessary! This goes for after the baby arrives too. If someone asks you what they can bring or what you need, tell them a meal would be lovely! 

TIP: If the idea of asking your friends or family to buy you something specific makes you squirm, is there a person in your life you could delegate this to? Maybe a sister or BFF who you could put in charge of a registry and direct people to if they ask? You could say something simple like, “My beautiful sister has actually set up a registry for me. So let me get her to get in touch with you!” Easy without the awkward!

As exciting as it is, starting solids can also be pretty daunting. Purees or baby-led weaning (BLW)? Four months or wait until six? What happens if they choke?!

Like most new mums, I did as much research as possible. I spoke to our GP and local community health nurses and followed all the top BLW pages on Insta, some run by dietitian colleagues. I purchased baby-specific cookbooks, and of course, I bought all the Pinterest-worthy gear for the highchair.

You know, between us in our team we have 21 children. We’ve done and seen it all! But there is something about being in a room of many pregnant women that shows a new kind of perspective. It’s easy to forget what pregnancy - and in particular that first pregnancy - feels like.

It’s enveloping, overwhelming, magical, and hard - all at the same time. You’re full of questions, and questions about the questions. And there’s so much information, so much that you can’t even really find the answers.

So this is where our focus group comes in.

We wanted to find out what they know, and how we can help fill the gaps, so that they get the answers they need to feel as secure as possible throughout their pregnancy. 

So let’s have a look through the answers to the first question we asked our pregnant focus group: What were some of the very first products you bought when you realised you were pregnant and where from?

You see, when I gave birth to my daughter four years ago, I had no real idea what to expect during the birthing process. What I got was a third-degree tear and also the high of really experiencing my birth. It was really hard, then utter magic, all in one day.

So when I fell pregnant with my son 13 months later, the doctors suggested a caesarean section, to avoid potential further damage, and I was all too happy to agree.

It was the first time a surplus was passed down in 15 years, so you know what that means? Money injected back into the economy - and as the Prime Minister promised - this would help with rising cost of living prices.

So although the overarching winners appear to young people, due to increased Jobseeker payments and rental assistance, we thought we’d comb through the budget to discover which announcements would most benefit Aussie families.

Soon after discovering the pregnancy, she was told she was having a baby girl. It was like a dream come true, as her sons Nixon and Aspen would be welcoming a baby sister.

As the weeks went by through her pregnancy, the excitement at the thought of meeting her little girl continued to grow. A fan of dressing her kids in matching outfits, Tialee began to dive into the world of dressing a little girl! Unchartered territory for her, it felt very new - and exciting!

Finally, she would have her little girl.

However, it was not to be.

Let’s hear her story, in her words:

‘21st of November 2019. 

A date that I had been hoping would one day come... I was told I was having a little girl. 20 weeks pregnant with our last and final babe - and we were having a little girl. Nixon and Aspen were going to have a little sister, Zach was going to one day walk this little babe down the aisle and I would have a best friend for life, as my mum has with me.

How on earth are you supposed to know which carrier is best? Which pram will grow with your family, and even which dummies to stock up on. It’s a bit like buying a house. You don’t know anything about laying carpet, or interior styling until you need to. And then it’s a whirlwind lesson like no other.

The same can be said for getting your head around the things you need for the impending birth of your baby, you can read all of the reviews and ‘10 of the best’ articles that you like to get a shortlist, but when it comes down to it, the people you really listen to are your friends who have been there before you.

So, when we conducted a focus group recently with 87 pregnant Aussie women, we just had to ask… ‘what are the products your friends and family have told you to buy?’

You see, I was lucky enough to have not one, but two “COVID babies” (aka babies born between 2020 and 2022). And truly I do mean lucky because I know just how blessed I am to have two healthy babies, and will never, ever take that for granted. But I have a little bone to pick, because having not one but two stints of maternity leave during a global pandemic has left me feeling, well, a little ripped off.

Life before the pandemic

Let’s rewind to 2019 – PC. Pre-COVID. Like many people in their early thirties, I was in the thick of wedding season. We had our dream wedding – with not a single thought of superspreaders or postponements. We even honeymooned in Europe. And then, we excitedly watched as two blue lines appeared on a pregnancy stick. Life was about to get wild! Little did we know just how wild it would be.

We did what many apartment-living Sydney-siders with a baby on the way do. We panicked, desperate to upsize and get into the housing market before it was “too late”. As luck would have it, we found our dream home on the “other side” of the Harbour Bridge in the Sutherland Shire – a sea change as I like to call it - and put our northside apartment on the market. At thirty weeks pregnant, we bought and sold a house, all in the same week. Two weeks later, the first case of COVID-19 hit Aussie shores. There’s that word lucky again.  

I’m sure many of us remember those early COVID days. There was a lot of nervous energy as we checked daily cases online, still in the single digits in Australia at this time. Many of us were sent home from work – “WFH, how good!”. We all perfected homemade banana bread. But then, life as we knew it really started to change.

The first lockdown in NSW was short and sharp – about four or five weeks from memory. Restaurants, gyms and “non-essential” shops closed down. Social gatherings were banned – no baby shower for me! According to government health officials there were only four reasons to leave the house. Remember how we could only exercise with one other person from our household?! Wild times indeed.
